The International Battery Company (IBC) is set to begin production at its lithium-ion battery manufacturing unit in Bengaluru within nine months. The project, with an estimated investment of ₹390 crore, is expected to create 300 direct jobs, according to a press release issued by the company.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the factory, located at the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) site in the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR), was held recently. The factory is being developed in collaboration with Mahanagar Gas Ltd.
The facility will initially manufacture lithium-ion cells locally, marking the first such production in India. These cells will be used to assemble battery packs for small mobility applications, including two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The company also plans to expand production to support larger mobility applications in subsequent phases.
IBC currently produces lithium-ion cells at its 35,000-square-foot facility in South Korea. A portion of the production from the Bengaluru factory—around 20%—is planned for export to markets in the United States and the European Union.
The project is intended to enhance India’s energy storage capabilities and reduce reliance on imports. The factory’s development aligns with broader goals of fostering local manufacturing and supporting renewable energy initiatives.
