The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has inaugurated the Centre for Electromagnetic Launch Technology (CEMaLT) to support research and development of electromagnetic railgun systems and related subsystems. The facility is intended to focus on hypersonic projectile launch technologies without the use of propellants.

The electromagnetic railgun is a system capable of accelerating projectiles to hypersonic speeds using electromagnetic force. According to DRDO, the development of such technology is aimed at future applications in the Indian Army and Navy.

The inauguration took place in the presence of Prateek Kishore, Director General (ACE); Manu Korulla, Director General (R&M); Chandrika Kaushik, Director General (PC&SI); and A Raju, Director of the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE).

DRDO stated that CEMaLT will enable focused research on launch physics, system integration, and high-energy power systems related to electromagnetic launch.

DRDO is India’s defence research agency under the Ministry of Defence, involved in the development of military technologies including aeronautics, armaments, electronics, land combat engineering, and naval systems.
