Knorr-Bremse, a manufacturer of rail and automotive components, has established a global artificial intelligence (AI) centre in Chennai, India, as part of its broader digital transformation strategy. The facility is scheduled to begin operations in August 2025 and is expected to employ around 70 specialists during its initial phase.

The Chennai team will focus on developing AI applications for accounting and software development. Future expansion areas include supply chain management and process optimisation.

A key part of the centre’s work will involve AI agents—automated software programs designed to break down and execute complex tasks. These agents will be supported by a dedicated analytics engine aimed at improving the speed and efficiency of software code development.

“A core objective of our BOOST strategy program is to increase the efficiency and performance of our organization. As part of this, we are also taking our entire global processes to a new level. Our new AI center in Chennai is a targeted investment in artificial intelligence, whose application to operational processes will make an important contribution to the digital transformation of Knorr-Bremse,” stated Marc Llistosella, CEO of Knorr-Bremse AG.

“AI is rapidly finding its way into all areas of the company – whether procurement, human resources, or IT. Our presence in the technology hub of Chennai offers ideal conditions. Specifically, highly qualified specialists on site can train AI models using our company data and adapt AI agents to our needs,” added Sathees Navaratnam, Chief Digital Officer at Knorr-Bremse.

The company also plans to integrate AI tools into its engineering and product development workflows for rail and commercial vehicle systems. These applications include virtual product testing, cost control, and the design of software and electronic components for braking systems.

Knorr-Bremse manufactures braking systems and other technologies for rail and commercial vehicles. The company operates in more than 30 countries and serves clients across the transportation and industrial sectors.
