Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) are developing a new manufacturing plant at Ranipet in Tamil Nadu with an investment of Rs 90 billion. The facility, spread over about 470 acres near Panapakkam, will focus on completely knocked down (CKD) assembly and is scheduled to start operations in early 2026. Initial production will include models such as the Range Rover Evoque and Velar, with an estimated capacity of about 30,000 units annually.

The first phase of construction covers 70 acres, with production volumes planned at around 500 units per month, scaling up to between 2,500 and 3,000 units. A second phase, expected after the 2026 elections, is planned to expand capacity to about 250,000 units annually. This expansion is expected to include electric vehicle manufacturing for both JLR and Tata Motors. The site has been located near Chennai and Ennore ports and is supported by regional infrastructure such as the Bengaluru-Chennai expressway and dedicated freight corridors.

According to the company, groundwork including road laying and land preparation has been progressing since early 2025. Tata Motors said the Ranipet facility will eventually centralise JLR’s CKD operations, which are currently based in Pune, and will also support Tata’s EV strategy under the Avinya brand.

The Ranipet site will be Tata Motors’ seventh manufacturing facility in India. The plant is intended to enhance manufacturing flexibility for both Tata Motors and JLR.

On August 31, 2025, JLR was hit by a cyberattack that forced the company to shut down its IT systems globally, resulting in a halt in vehicle production across its key manufacturing sites in the UK (Solihull, Halewood, Wolverhampton), as well as facilities in Slovakia, China, and India. JLR has acknowledged ongoing operational and financial challenges as it works to restore its systems and resume normal manufacturing activities.

Tata Motors, part of the Tata Group, operates multiple vehicle manufacturing plants in India and has a presence in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and electric mobility solutions. Jaguar Land Rover, a subsidiary of Tata Motors, manufactures luxury vehicles and has assembly operations in several international markets.
