Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Limited on 16 March 2026 announced the commencement of operations of two additional furnaces at its ferro chrome plant in Kalinganagar, located in Jajpur district of Odisha. The furnaces form part of the facility acquired from Tata Steel and mark further progress in bringing the plant to full operational status.

This follows an earlier update on 11 March 2026, when the first two furnaces at the plant were restarted after the acquisition.

The acquisition of the Kalinganagar plant was completed on 27 February 2026 for INR 7.07 billion. The facility has four existing furnaces with a combined capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum. A fifth furnace, which is currently under construction, is expected to be commissioned by early 2027 and is projected to increase the plant’s capacity to 150,000 tonnes per annum.

In parallel with the acquired asset, the company is developing a separate greenfield ferro chrome facility in Kalinganagar. The first phase of this project involves a 100,000 tonnes per annum unit, with the first furnace targeted for commissioning by June 2026.

To support its energy requirements, the company signed a 25-year power purchase agreement in September 2025 for 70 MW of hybrid renewable energy, comprising solar and wind sources, with JSW Neo Energy.

Following these developments, the company’s total production capacity is expected to exceed 500,000 tonnes per annum once all Kalinganagar projects are fully operational by the financial year ending 2028. The Kalinganagar operations are located near captive mines in Sukinda and Mahagiri and have access to Paradeep Port, supporting both domestic and export markets.

Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Limited is an India-based producer of ferro alloys, primarily ferro chrome, used in stainless steel manufacturing.
