Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has delivered the first AL-31FP aero engine, part of a contract to supply 240 engines for the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Su-30MKI aircraft fleet. The delivery was made on September 30, 2024, at HAL’s facility in Koraput, Odisha. This follows a ₹26,000 crore agreement signed between HAL and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on September 9, 2024.

Under the contract, HAL will manufacture and deliver 240 engines over a period of eight years. The AL-31FP engines power the Su-30MKI, the IAF’s front-line multirole fighter aircraft.

The contract is expected to enhance indigenous capabilities in engine manufacturing, with HAL planning to increase the domestic content of the production process. According to HAL officials, the current local industry participation in the project is at 40%, with plans to raise it to over 50% within the next 2-3 years.

The first engine delivery was completed just two weeks after the signing of the contract. HAL has expressed its commitment to meet the delivery schedule for the remaining engines under the contract.
