Mercedes-Benz has started local production of the Long Wheelbase (LWB) E-Class at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. The LWB E-Class is scheduled for its market debut on October 9, 2024.
The new LWB E-Class 200 recently received the CMVR Type Approval Certificate from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) after undergoing extensive testing in Pune, Chennai, and internationally in Germany and Spain. These tests evaluated compliance with BS 6-2 emission standards, crash safety, pedestrian protection, and equipment functionality.
India is currently the only global market where Mercedes-Benz produces the LWB E-Class in its right-hand drive (RHD) configuration. Mercedes-Benz has been manufacturing the E-Class in India since 1995, making it the first model to roll off the company’s Indian assembly line.
The sixth-generation LWB E-Class includes several technological advancements, such as the MBUX infotainment system and a center airbag to enhance passenger safety during side collisions. Another key feature is the MBUX Super-screen, designed with a two-stage blocking system that allows the front passenger to access entertainment while minimizing distractions for the driver.
Production at the Chakan facility is supported by an automated body shop for the rear floor, incorporating advanced robotics and intelligent automation. The company has opened bookings for the LWB E-Class, which is expected to draw interest from customers seeking a combination of luxury, technology, and safety.
