Mercedes-Benz India has reached a production milestone with the rollout of its 200,000th locally manufactured vehicle from its facility in Chakan, Pune. The milestone vehicle was an EQS SUV. The company has recorded an accelerated pace in output, manufacturing the most recent 50,000 vehicles in just over two years.
The Chakan facility began operations in 1995. The first 50,000 cars were produced over 19 years, followed by another 100,000 over the next nine years. The company now produces 11 different models locally, including both internal combustion engine (ICE) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
Local production of BEVs began in 2022 with the EQS sedan, followed by the EQS SUV in 2024. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz India became the first to manufacture the Mercedes-Maybach S500 outside Germany. The plant has used 100% renewable energy since 2022.
The company has invested a total of INR 3,000 crores in its Indian operations to date, including a new investment of INR 200 crores in 2024. According to Mercedes-Benz India, this is the highest investment by a luxury car manufacturer in the country’s automotive manufacturing sector.
Santosh Iyer, Managing Director & CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said, “Mercedes-Benz production facility is the backbone of our Indian operations and has played a critical role in our market success, manufacturing world-class ICE and BEV products for the discerning Indian customers.”
The company operates over 100 retail outlets across more than 50 Indian cities.
