Godavari Biorefineries Limited (GBL) has entered into a licensing agreement with Catalyxx Inc. to utilize the latter’s technology for ethanol-to-biobutanol conversion. The agreement enables GBL to produce up to 30,000 metric tons of biobutanol and other higher alcohols annually for domestic and international markets.

Under the first phase of this collaboration, GBL will construct a facility capable of producing 15,000 metric tons of biobutanol and higher alcohols annually. The plant aims to use renewable resources for production, aligning with the company’s decarbonization objectives.

The partnership is intended to expand GBL’s portfolio in renewable chemicals and biofuels. Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of GBL, described the collaboration as a step towards advancing sustainable chemistry, highlighting the anticipated business and environmental impact.

Joaquín Alarcón, CEO of Catalyxx, noted that the agreement follows years of development work and is expected to contribute to a greener chemical industry.

GBL, a publicly listed company on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India, specializes in renewable chemicals and biofuels. Catalyxx focuses on technology development for replacing fossil-based chemicals with sustainable alternatives.

The facility is expected to contribute to global efforts to transition to greener industrial processes, with further phases potentially increasing production capacity.
