The Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) reported that construction at its manufacturing facility in Kota, Rajasthan has achieved 96 percent physical progress. The plant, which began producing fuel tubes in March 2025 using available infrastructure, is in the final stages of development. A module with a designed output of 250 tonnes per year (TPY) of nuclear fuel is expected to be fully commissioned by the end of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
The announcement was made by NFC Chief Executive and Distinguished Scientist Komal Kapoor during NFC Day celebrations in Hyderabad, marking the anniversary of the first nuclear fuel bundle produced at the facility in June 1973.
Kapoor highlighted that in 2024–25, the organisation not only met its production targets but also made progress in automating and mechanising various fuel fabrication processes. In addition to its primary fuel fabrication work, NFC also delivered high-precision components to the defence and space sectors and completed several expansion projects during the year.
The Hyderabad event was attended by R. B. Grover, Member of the Atomic Energy Commission and former Principal Advisor to the Department of Atomic Energy, and S.V.S. Narayana Murty, Chairman and Managing Director of MIDHANI. Murty acknowledged the continued collaboration between MIDHANI and NFC across multiple technical domains.
NFC operates under the Department of Atomic Energy and is responsible for producing nuclear fuel and structural components for Indian nuclear power reactors. It also supplies specialised components used in strategic sectors such as defence and space.
