ROHM Co., Ltd. and Tata Electronics Private Limited have entered into a strategic partnership to manufacture semiconductors in India for domestic and global markets, marking a new collaboration between Japanese and Indian semiconductor supply chains. The agreement focuses on establishing manufacturing and packaging capabilities for power semiconductors, with an initial emphasis on products for the automotive sector.

The partnership combines ROHM’s device design and technology capabilities with Tata Electronics’ semiconductor assembly and test infrastructure. The collaboration is intended to support demand from Indian customers while also enabling exports to global markets.

As an initial step, Tata Electronics will assemble and test an automotive-grade N-channel 100-volt, 300-ampere silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) designed by ROHM in India. The device will be packaged in a TO-LL format, with mass production shipments targeted for the next year. The companies also plan to explore the co-development of advanced packaging technologies over time and jointly market products manufactured under the partnership.

ROHM said the collaboration would allow it to expand the range of packaged semiconductor products manufactured in India and help build a more regionally diversified supply chain. “Through this partnership, we aim to expand our lineup of packaged products manufactured in India and help build a sustainable, region-based supply chain network,” said Kazuhide Ino, board member and managing executive officer at ROHM.

Tata Electronics said the agreement aligns with its strategy to build end-to-end semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in India. Randhir Thakur, chief executive officer and managing director of Tata Electronics, said the company would provide chip packaging services through its assembly and test facilities to support ROHM’s product requirements for both Indian and overseas customers.

The partnership comes as Tata Electronics advances large-scale investments across the semiconductor value chain. The company is developing India’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, with a total planned investment of USD 11 billion. It is also building an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam, with an investment of USD 3 billion. These facilities are expected to serve customers across automotive, mobile devices, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, defence, and aerospace sectors.

ROHM, established in 1958, manufactures integrated circuits, discrete devices, and electronic components for automotive, industrial, and consumer applications. The company has a global development and sales network, with a focus on analogue and power semiconductor technologies.

Tata Electronics Private Limited, established in 2020 as a Tata Group company, operates across electronics manufacturing services, semiconductor assembly and test, semiconductor foundry, and design services, with manufacturing operations in Gujarat, Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
