Renesas Electronics India, a supplier of microcontrollers and system-on-chip solutions, has inaugurated two semiconductor design centres in Noida and Bengaluru focused on 3-nanometer (3nm) chip design. These facilities mark the company’s expansion in advanced semiconductor design capabilities in India, part of a broader strategic move to scale its research and development operations in the country.

The new Bengaluru office now serves as Renesas’ largest site in India, hosting approximately 500 employees, including R&D engineers and business teams. The Noida office is geared towards supporting Renesas’ automotive semiconductor initiatives, particularly its R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) solutions. Both offices are designed to integrate testing facilities and modern workflows, enhancing collaboration across Renesas’ global engineering teams.

Renesas signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology’s Chips to Startup (C2S) programme. The first MOU supports startups with development boards and design tools, while the second provides academic institutions with development kits and training materials. The collaboration includes support for over 250 academic institutions and around 15 startups.

“This integration of software and hardware learning will create truly industry-ready engineers,” said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Electronics and IT Minister, at the inauguration event announcing the launch of a new semiconductor learning kit aimed at engineering students.

“India is a strategic cornerstone for our company, with growing contributions in embedded systems, software, and system innovation,” stated Renesas CEO Hidetoshi Shibata. He added that Renesas aims to generate over 10 percent of its global revenue from India by 2030.

The company is also increasing its India workforce, targeting a headcount of 1,000 by the end of 2025. Recent partnerships include a joint OSAT factory project with CG Power and Stars Microelectronics in Gujarat, and a memorandum with IIT Hyderabad.
