Larsen & Toubro Limited has received a supply order from the Indian Army for the overhaul, upgrade and obsolescence management of in-service Pinaka Multi-Rocket Launcher Systems. The programme is aimed at improving long-term operational availability and modernisation of Pinaka regiments currently deployed with the Army.
The order covers lifecycle support activities for the indigenous artillery system, including component upgrades, management of obsolete parts and sustained technical support. According to a press release issued by Larsen & Toubro Limited, the partnership has been undertaken with the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) of the Indian Army and is structured as a long-term sustenance and upgrade programme for frontline artillery systems.
The programme will focus on upgrading critical sub-systems and supporting Army Base Workshops through a more structured, lifecycle-based maintenance framework. As part of the initiative, 510 Army Base Workshop EME will carry out the overhaul and upgrade of key electronics and systems, drawing on its existing domain expertise. L&T, as the original equipment manufacturer, will supply critical spares and provide technical support to enable modernisation of the systems.
In the initial phase, L&T and 510 Army Base Workshop will jointly undertake a pilot overhaul of a Pinaka launcher and a Battery Command Post. Upon successful completion of this pilot, the remaining systems will be overhauled by 510 Army Base Workshop, with L&T continuing to provide spares, technical assistance and quality oversight throughout the programme.
The company stated that the arrangement reinforces the public–private partnership model in defence sustenance by combining in-house military maintenance capabilities with industry-led design and systems integration support. The programme is intended to move away from conventional maintenance practices towards a structured approach focused on lifecycle management and planned upgrades.
The model is expected to be extended to other defence platforms, creating a framework for long-term lifecycle management and upgrade of complex systems already in service. The approach is designed to support sustained availability of equipment through coordinated upgrades rather than periodic standalone maintenance activities.
L&T has previously worked with the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Army on the design and supply of the Pinaka artillery systems. The latest order reflects a continuation of that engagement, with a focus on post-induction support and system modernisation over the operational life of the platform.
