BEML Limited has commissioned a robotic welding cell and a Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) axle assembly shop at its manufacturing complex in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Karnataka, as part of its ongoing modernisation programme. The company said the new facilities are intended to strengthen manufacturing capability, improve process efficiency, and support quality and productivity improvements at the KGF complex.

The robotic welding cell has been set up to manufacture critical components used in earthmoving dozers. The cell is equipped with pulse welding systems and laser-based sensing solutions, which the company said are designed to improve productivity, ensure consistent weld quality, and reduce rework in fabrication operations. BEML stated that the adoption of robotic welding is expected to contribute to higher manufacturing efficiency and process repeatability.

The company also inaugurated a new HMV axle assembly shop at the same site. The facility has an installed capacity of nine axles per day and includes infrastructure for axle assembly, sub-assembly operations, and end-of-line testing. BEML said the shop has been designed with ergonomically engineered workstations to improve workplace safety and operational efficiency, while also supporting workforce well-being. The company added that the layout and infrastructure align with its stated green manufacturing principles.

The facilities were inaugurated by Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML Limited, in the presence of Sanjay Som, Director (Mining and Construction), Yogananda G, Head of the KGF Complex, and other senior management representatives. The company did not disclose the investment value associated with the commissioning of the new facilities.

In parallel with the commissioning of the manufacturing units, BEML has operationalised a dedicated GEMBA area at the KGF complex. The company said the GEMBA workplace is intended to support lean manufacturing practices and continuous improvement initiatives. The area provides real-time visual information on performance metrics, operational issues, and improvement actions, enabling quicker decision-making and improved cross-functional communication across teams.

BEML stated that the GEMBA initiative is aimed at improving employee engagement while supporting sustained improvements in productivity and quality across operations at the KGF complex.

BEML Limited is a public sector enterprise engaged in the design, manufacture, and supply of equipment for mining and construction, defence, rail and metro, and related infrastructure sectors. The company operates multiple manufacturing facilities across India, including the Kolar Gold Fields complex in Karnataka.
