Larsen & Toubro’s Special Steels and Heavy Forgings (LTSSHF) has dispatched multiple marine shaft shipsets to domestic customers, marking a shift towards local manufacturing of components that were previously imported. The dispatch, flagged off on 17 March, includes complete propulsion shaft line assemblies comprising multiple shaft types for marine applications.

Each shipset consists of two propeller shafts, two stern tube shafts, and two intermediate shafts, forming a complete propulsion shaft system. The shafts are high-precision components and had largely been sourced from overseas suppliers prior to this development.

The shafts supplied include stern tube shafts exceeding 13 metres in length, propeller shafts exceeding 11 metres, and intermediate shafts exceeding 6 metres. These dimensions indicate the scale of forgings involved in marine propulsion systems and the capability to manufacture long-length shafts domestically.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by Anil Parab, Whole-time Director and Senior Executive Vice President, Heavy Engineering and Manufacturing, Larsen & Toubro, and Laxmesh BH, Chief Executive of LTSSHF, along with representatives from the customer organisation. The participants described the development as a first instance of such marine shaft systems being produced domestically.

LTSSHF had received approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) in November 2025 to supply critical forgings of all types of steel for marine applications. The approval enables LTSSHF to meet ABS requirements and supply certified forgings for marine sector projects.

In February 2026, LTSSHF manufactured and delivered marine propeller shafts exceeding 11 metres in length, each weighing approximately 11 metric tonnes, for a domestic project. The company described this as a qualification supply for the application, involving stringent metallurgical and dimensional requirements.

The company added that these developments build on its ongoing work in manufacturing critical forgings across sectors and expand its participation in the marine and shipbuilding sector.

L&T Special Steels and Heavy Forgings is a division of Larsen & Toubro engaged in the production of heavy forgings and specialised steel components for sectors including energy, defence, and industrial applications.
