BEML Limited has been awarded a ₹3,658 crore contract by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for the design, manufacture, supply, testing, and maintenance of metro rolling stock and depot machinery. The contract includes 210 metro cars configured as 70 three-car trainsets, to be deployed in Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode, a high level of metro automation (Grade of Automation 4).

The metro trains will operate across three corridors spanning 118.9 kilometers, including both elevated (76.3 km) and underground (42.6 km) sections:

  • Corridor 3: Madhavaram to Sipcot (45.8 km)
  • Corridor 4: Lighthouse to Poonamallee (26.1 km)
  • Corridor 5: Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (47 km)

The first trainset is set for delivery in January 2027, with completion by April 2029. Maintenance services will cover a 15-year period starting from the commencement of revenue operations for the 70th trainset.
