Andhra Pradesh has announced plans for a double-decker metro rail system in Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, with a total proposed network of 66 kilometers and 76.9 kilometers, respectively. The project aims to improve urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion in these cities.

The metro system will be implemented in phases. In Visakhapatnam, the first phase will include a 15-kilometer stretch from Madhurawada to Thatichetlapalem and a 4-kilometer section from Gajuwaka to the Visakha Steel Plant. In Vijayawada, the initial phase will cover 4.7 kilometers from Ramavarappadu Ring Road to Nidamanuru.

The funding model aligns with the 2017 policy for metro projects, under which the central government is expected to bear the full cost. The Chief Minister has instructed officials to expedite discussions with the central government to secure the required approvals and financial support.

Officials from various departments, including Ministers P Narayana and BC Janardhan Reddy, participated in discussions about the project, which is intended to be operational within four years.

The double-decker design has been chosen for sections along national and state highways to optimize space utilization. Further details regarding project timelines and additional phases are expected to be finalized following discussions with the central government.
