RRP Semiconductor Ltd. has entered the fabless semiconductor market through the acquisition of complete intellectual property (IP) for application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design from its European technology partners. The move marks a shift towards independent semiconductor design and development.
According to the company’s press release, the acquisition includes expertise in ASIC development workflow, front-end and back-end design, electronic design automation (EDA) tool selection, and project management aspects such as risk and timeline management. RRP Semiconductor also plans to conduct workshops and training programs on ASIC design and real-world applications.
With this development, RRP Semiconductor gains the capability to design and manufacture a range of semiconductor components, including those used in the automotive sector. The company estimates that the market potential for these components could increase from USD 25 million to over USD 100 million within two years of deployment.
ASICs are specialized integrated circuits designed for specific applications, including digital voice recorders and high-efficiency video codecs. Modern ASICs can integrate entire microprocessors, forming system-on-chip (SoC) solutions used in various industries.
The ASIC market is projected to surpass USD 30 billion by 2031, with an expected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.1% between 2031 and 2034. RRP Semiconductor states that its in-house ASIC design capabilities will allow it to offer customized chip layout solutions for fabrication units, supporting wafer production and other semiconductor manufacturing processes.
The company, along with its affiliated firms, has existing facilities for outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) packaging and fab prototyping. The integration of ASIC design is expected to enhance its role within the semiconductor supply chain.
