Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD is evaluating potential sites near Hyderabad for a new production facility, according to reports. The Telangana government has proposed three locations for the plant, which, once finalized, will involve an agreement between BYD and state authorities.

The facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 600,000 EVs over the next five to seven years. The move follows BYD’s previous attempt in 2023 to establish an EV plant in India through a joint venture with Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), which was not approved by the Indian government.

BYD has an existing technical partnership with Olectra Greentech, a subsidiary of MEIL, which manufactures and supplies electric buses using BYD’s technology. Industry analysts suggest this collaboration may have influenced the company’s decision to consider Telangana for its new facility.

In addition to vehicle manufacturing, BYD has plans for a 20-gigawatt battery production plant in India. The company has been expanding its global presence and recently reported revenue of approximately USD 107 billion.

BYD representatives are currently reviewing the proposed sites before making a final decision on the plant’s location.
