BMW Industries Limited is undertaking a series of capacity expansion initiatives and new projects, as outlined in its May 2025 strategy presentation. These include a greenfield downstream steel processing facility in Bokaro with an estimated investment of INR 8.03 billion, and continued brownfield expansion in pipes and tubes manufacturing.

The Bokaro project is planned to produce cold rolled coils/sheets, galvanized, galvalume, ZAM-coated, and colour-coated steel products. Proposed capacities include 300,000 TPA (tonnes per annum) of cold rolled full hard coils/sheets, 540,000 TPA of GA/GL/ZAM-coated coils/sheets, and 200,000 TPA of colour-coated coils/sheets. The facility is expected to become operational in stages, with the first plant scheduled to begin commercial production in FY26.

According to the presentation, the expansion will be funded through a mix of internal accruals and debt, with approximately 30% of the capital to be sourced internally and the remaining 70% financed through debt. BMW Industries has been selected under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) 1.1 Scheme by the Ministry of Steel for the ‘Coated/Plated Steel’ category.

In addition to greenfield expansion, the company is continuing brownfield development of its pipes and tubes manufacturing capacity. Production capacity was increased from 204,000 TPA in FY24 to 534,000 TPA in FY25. A further increase to 700,000 TPA is projected by FY26. A two-phase capex plan supports this expansion, with the first phase already completed and INR 250 million allocated for the second phase from internal accruals.

The tubes manufacturing contract has been extended through the first half of FY27, with expected revenue of INR 3.65 billion over the contract period. The facilities support key sectors including infrastructure, solar, and defence.

As of March 2025, BMW Industries reported the following installed capacities and production volumes:

  • CRM Complex: 1,014,000 TPA installed; 766,113 MT produced (75.6% utilization)
  • Rolling Mill (TMT Bars): 180,000 TPA installed; 163,199 MT produced (90.7% utilization)
  • Rolling Mill (TMT Bars) – Under Decommissioning: 120,000 TPA installed; 22,946 MT produced
  • Pipes & Tubes: 534,000 TPA installed; 177,485 MT produced (33.2% utilization)

The strategy also highlights the location advantages of BMW’s operating hubs in Jamshedpur, Bokaro, and West Bengal, citing proximity to raw materials, customer bases, and transport infrastructure. The company operates five plants in Jamshedpur, two in Bokaro, as well as one plant and its head office in West Bengal.

BMW Industries Limited is engaged in the processing of hot rolled coils into value-added products such as cold rolled, galvanized, and colour-coated sheets, pipes, tubes, and structural components. The company operates under a B2B model with multi-year processing contracts, offering services across steel conversion, logistics, and inventory management.
