Tata Steel has completed the Phase II expansion of its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, increasing its crude steel production capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 8 MTPA. The company has invested INR 270 billion in this expansion project.
The enhanced facility, located in Jajpur district, is set to produce advanced high-strength steel for sectors including automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, and defence. The project includes a new blast furnace with a volume of 5,870 cubic metres—described by the company as the largest in India—and incorporates four top combustion stoves and two preheating stoves designed to reduce specific fuel consumption during hot metal production.
Other facilities commissioned as part of Phase II include a pellet plant, coke plant, and cold rolling mill, all featuring updated technologies with a focus on efficiency and sustainability. The expanded capacity makes Odisha the single largest investment destination for Tata Steel, according to the company.
Tata Steel is a steel producer with a crude steel capacity of 35 MTPA and operations across five continents. In the financial year ending March 31, 2025, the group reported a consolidated turnover of approximately USD 26 billion. The company has announced a Net Zero target by 2045 and operates multiple ResponsibleSteel certified sites in India.
