Nissin Electric Co., Ltd. has commenced demonstration operations of a micro substation with a power voltage transformer (PVT) on the outskirts of Delhi. The project, developed in collaboration with TATA Power-Delhi Distribution Limited (TATA Power-DDL) and supported by Power Finance Corporation (PFC) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) of Japan, aims to establish stable power supply systems in areas with limited grid infrastructure.

The micro substation is installed at a site owned by TATA Power-DDL and directly converts extra high voltage (EHV) power from transmission lines to low voltage power (240 V). The system is designed to supply electricity to approximately 50 to 100 households per substation without the need for large-scale distribution infrastructure. The demonstration seeks to verify the reliability of this power supply method and its effectiveness in delivering stable electricity to areas where traditional grids are not developed.

This project is part of the International Demonstration Project on Japan’s Technologies for Decarbonization and Energy Transition. NEDO and Nissin Electric signed a letter of intent in January 2024 with Power Finance Corporation regarding the demonstration, followed by a project agreement with TATA Power-DDL in August 2024.

The micro substation integrates protective devices, switchgear, lightning arresters, a distribution board, and a PVT. The PVT can directly convert EHV power (66 kV or higher) to low voltage power without the need for conventional large substations. This system allows for low operation costs, reduced space requirements, and an estimated 45 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to diesel generators.

A ceremony marking the start of the demonstration operation was held on June 18, 2025, at the Smart Grid Lab of TATA Power-DDL in New Delhi, with participation from representatives from India and Japan.

Nissin Electric plans to explore the application of this technology in other regions within India and in countries with similar power supply challenges.

Nissin Electric Co., Ltd. is engaged in the development of power system equipment and solutions, including transformers and electric power distribution technologies. The company focuses on providing systems that support power infrastructure and energy management.
