Thermax, an energy and environment solutions provider, has inaugurated a pilot facility in Pune for the development of Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell (SOEC) technology. The facility will focus on developing a pressurised SOEC system over the next 11 months in collaboration with UK-based technology partner CERES.
According to the company, the facility is intended to support work on a modular, high-efficiency green hydrogen solution aimed at achieving a lower Levelised Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). The inauguration was attended by members of Thermax’s Green Hydrogen team.
The company operates 10 manufacturing facilities in India out of 14 globally. Major sites include Pune, Shirwal, Paudh, Solapur, Dahej, Jhagadia, Mundra, and Savli in Gujarat, and Sri City in Andhra Pradesh.
Thermax conducts operations in Industrial Products, Industrial Infrastructure, Green Solutions, and Chemicals. The Industrial Products segment includes boilers, chillers, air pollution control systems, and water treatment equipment, with strong demand from the metals, cement, and food & beverage sectors. Industrial Infra focuses on larger turnkey projects, including process heating and power generation systems.
The Green Solutions segment covers clean energy, clean air, and clean water offerings. This includes biomass-fired equipment, solar PV plants, waste heat recovery, and green hydrogen initiatives such as a planned solid oxide electrolyzer manufacturing facility. The company also provides air pollution control systems and a wide range of water and wastewater treatment solutions. The Chemicals segment includes ion exchange resins, fuel and water treatment chemicals, oil field chemicals, and construction chemicals.
In addition to manufacturing, Thermax provides operations and maintenance services for industrial utilities and power plants. Its digital platform, Thermax EDGE Live, applies AI/ML to optimize asset performance through real-time data analytics. Other services include retrofitting, energy audits, and Build-Own-Operate (BOO) models managed through its subsidiary, Thermax Onsite Energy Solutions Limited (TOESL).
