Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has signed a contract with Germany-based Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reederei GmbH & Co. KG for the construction of four hybrid multi-purpose vessels (MPVs). The total contract value is USD 62.44 million.

The agreement covers the design, construction, and delivery of four 7,500 deadweight tonnage (DWT) vessels. Each ship will be 120 metres in length, 17 metres in width, and have a maximum draft of 6.75 metres. They will be capable of carrying 7,500 metric tonnes of cargo in a single large hold, including bulk, general, and project cargoes, with additional provision for containers on hatch covers. The vessels are also designed to transport multiple large windmill blades on deck.

The MPVs will be equipped with battery-assisted hybrid propulsion systems aimed at improving fuel efficiency and complying with International Maritime Organization decarbonisation requirements. Construction is expected to be completed within 33 to 42 months from the effective date of the contract.

The contract follows GRSE’s ongoing 7,500 DWT MPV project currently under execution in Kolkata. GRSE had earlier signed agreements in June, September, and December 2024, and March 2025, taking the total order for this vessel class to eight units. Steel cutting for the Coral 7500 DWT MPV series commenced in April 2025.

The signing ceremony took place in Hamburg between Shantanu Bose, Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and Thomas Rehder, Managing Director, Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reederei GmbH & Co. KG.
