Scania, a truck manufacturing company based in Sweden, has announced a renewed strategy for the Indian market, concentrating initially on mining and construction segments before expanding into on-road haulage over the next three to four years. The company has also launched its Super Series range in India, a globally homologated product line designed for multiple fuel options, including diesel, biodiesel blends, gas, and future electrification.

Led by Silvio Munhoz, a 43-year industry veteran who previously headed operations in Brazil and Chile, Scania is positioning its India business as a reset operation under the Volkswagen Group framework. “Our rightful place in India is not just to be present, but to be competitive in the segments where we are strong globally,” said Munhoz.

The Narasapura plant near Bengaluru has an installed annual capacity of 2,000 units, though utilisation currently remains low. Localisation levels are below 30 percent, but Scania intends to raise this in the coming years. “Once we stabilise production and supply chains in China by 2026, we will bring that experience to India and ramp up localisation,” stated Munhoz. Future localisation plans could include local assembly of gearboxes, axles, and engines, subject to demand growth and fresh investment.

In the short term (0–2 years), Scania aims to strengthen its presence in coal, iron ore, and limestone mining, as well as heavy construction, while expanding its dealer and service network. Medium-term priorities (3–5 years) include selective entry into on-road haulage, increased localisation, and potential exports to neighbouring South Asian markets such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. In the longer term (5+ years), the company may consider capacity expansion, deeper localisation, and engineering or R&D operations from India.

Scania is also offering bundled services such as financing, leasing, driver training, telematics-enabled driver coaching, uptime guarantees, resale support, and customer workshop management.

While Scania has no plans to revive its earlier bus body operations, it sees potential in supplying luxury coach chassis, citing India’s demand for premium sleeper buses alongside infrastructure growth.

Scania AB, headquartered in Södertälje, Sweden, is a manufacturer of heavy trucks, buses, and engines. It operates as part of the Volkswagen Group and has a presence in multiple global markets, with India positioned as a strategic growth region in its long-term plans.
