INOX Air Products Private Limited has deployed India’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled cryogenic tanker approved by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO), marking a manufacturing and regulatory milestone for industrial gas logistics in the country. The manufacturing of this tanker has been enabled by a June 2025 amendment to the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) Rules, 2016, allowing LNG to be used as a transport fuel for such applications.
The tanker was flagged off by P Seeniraj, Joint Chief Controller of Explosives, PESO Vadodara Circle, following statutory clearances. According to a press release issued by the company, the approval makes INOX Air Products the first industrial gas manufacturer in India to operationalise an LNG-fuelled cryogenic tanker under the revised framework.
The vehicle is powered by LNG through a 450-litre Kryopower LNG fuel tank manufactured by INOX India Limited. The LNG-based propulsion system is designed to lower carbon dioxide emissions by up to 25 percent and particulate emissions by about 95 percent compared with conventional diesel-fuelled tankers. The configuration also offers lower noise levels and improved fuel efficiency, supporting operational cost optimisation over the long term.
Siddharth Jain, Director, INOX Group, said the deployment demonstrates a shift towards cleaner logistics in the industrial gases sector. “INOXAP is spearheading a clean-energy shift in India’s industrial gases sector by flagging off the nation’s first LNG-fuelled cryogenic tanker,” Jain said. He added that the development was made possible by the DPIIT policy amendment and regulatory approvals from PESO.
Both the cryogenic tanker and the LNG fuel tank have been designed and manufactured at facilities in Gujarat operated by INOX India. The industrial gases transported using this tanker will be produced by INOX Air Products within Gujarat and supplied primarily to customers in the state, creating a localised supply chain covering manufacturing, transportation, and end use.
The policy amendment by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) reflects a broader government push to promote LNG as a transport fuel for reducing emissions from heavy-duty and specialised vehicles. The deployment of LNG-fuelled cryogenic tankers is expected to provide a cleaner alternative for long-haul industrial gas transportation while meeting safety and performance requirements.
INOX Air Products Private Limited is part of the INOX Group and operates industrial gas manufacturing and supply facilities across India, serving sectors including metals, energy, chemicals, healthcare, and manufacturing.
