Larsen & Toubro Limited has secured engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) orders from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) for steel plant expansion and modernisation projects in India, adding to its order inflows in the domestic minerals and metals sector. The contracts relate to capacity augmentation at SAIL’s integrated steel plants and fall within the company’s disclosed order value band of INR 50 billion to INR 100 billion.

The orders have been awarded to L&T’s Minerals & Metals business as part of SAIL’s ongoing investment programme aimed at increasing crude steel capacity and strengthening upstream infrastructure at key production facilities.

A substantial portion of the work is associated with SAIL’s expansion of the IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur in West Bengal. SAIL plans to increase crude steel capacity at the plant from 2.5 million tonnes per annum to 6.5 million tonnes per annum. Under this programme, L&T has been awarded the complete engineering, procurement and installation scope for several critical process units, including the Coke Oven Battery, By-Product Plant and Basic Oxygen Furnace, along with a specialised material handling equipment package. These units together constitute the core facilities of the new steel complex being developed at the site.

L&T has also secured an EPC package at SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand, where an upstream expansion is underway. The scope of work involves the establishment of Sinter Plant No. 2, which is intended to enhance raw material preparation capabilities and support higher levels of hot metal production at the plant.

“L&T has been a contributor to India’s industrial growth in the metals sector, and our association with SAIL spans several decades,” said D K Sen, Advisor to the Chairman and Managing Director for Development Projects and Minerals & Metals at Larsen & Toubro Limited. “These orders reflect our continued involvement in SAIL’s expansion programmes and our role in executing large metallurgical infrastructure projects.”

“The repeat orders validate our capability to deliver complex, technology-intensive projects under challenging schedules,” said T Kumaresan, Senior Vice President and Head of the Minerals & Metals business at Larsen & Toubro Limited. “They also highlight our end-to-end execution strengths across process plants and associated systems.”

In addition to the SAIL contracts, L&T’s Minerals & Metals business has secured further orders from other domestic customers for specialised material handling equipment, including stacker reclaimers and wagon tipplers, used across bulk material handling operations in the metals sector.
