Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. began operations at its new manufacturing facility at Panapakkam in the Ranipet district of Tamil Nadu on 9 February 2026, marking the start of production at a greenfield plant planned to manufacture next-generation vehicles for both Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover brands. The first vehicle to roll out of the facility was the locally manufactured Range Rover Evoque.

The Panapakkam facility represents the first phase of a multi-stage development programme and is designed to produce vehicles, including electric vehicles, for domestic and international markets. Vehicle production will be scaled up in phases, with the plant expected to reach a full designed annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles over the next five to seven years.

The Panapakkam plant is operated by Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. along with its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc. The site is intended to support manufacturing for both brands and will produce internal combustion engine and electric vehicles as part of future product programmes, with output serving Indian and select international markets.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. plans to invest approximately INR 90 billion in the Panapakkam manufacturing facility. The project has the potential to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities and is expected to support the development of an ancillary supplier ecosystem in the region.

The workforce at the plant includes shopfloor technicians recruited from across Tamil Nadu who are part of Tata Motors’ Lakshya programme, an earn-while-you-learn initiative. Selected through a state-wide assessment of polytechnic graduates, participants undergo five months of training at Jaguar Land Rover facilities and have the opportunity to pursue a company-sponsored Bachelor of Technology degree while employed.

The facility was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, and N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd.

“Tata Group has long played a pivotal role in nation building and shares a deep, historic partnership with Tamil Nadu. With the commencement of operations at this new manufacturing facility and the rollout of the first Range Rover Evoque in Panapakkam, Ranipet, the state is proud to witness the expansion of world-class automotive manufacturing,” said M.K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

“The inauguration of our Panapakkam facility marks a significant milestone in the Tata Group’s journey to accelerate India’s leadership in sustainable and future-ready manufacturing,” said N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd.

The company said the Panapakkam facility has been designed to operate entirely on renewable energy, be water positive, and adhere to global environmental standards aimed at improving resource efficiency and reducing emissions.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., part of the Tata Group, focuses on the development, manufacture, and sale of passenger vehicles, including cars, sport utility vehicles, and electric vehicles for the Indian market and select international markets.
