Ashok Leyland Limited has begun construction of a battery pack manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The project marks the development of a greenfield unit intended to support the company’s electric mobility manufacturing and battery pack production capabilities.

The project will involve an investment of INR 4–5 billion and forms part of investments by the Hinduja Group under a memorandum of understanding signed in September 2025. The facility is intended to support localisation of electric vehicle (EV) battery pack production and strengthen the EV supply chain.

The company said the battery pack project aligns with Tamil Nadu’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2023 and the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage. The facility is expected to contribute to employment and skill development in advanced manufacturing related to electric mobility.

“Our journey has been closely intertwined with the growth of Tamil Nadu for more than seven decades. Ashok Leyland, along with its subsidiary, Switch Mobility, have already developed a vast range of electric Commercial Vehicles, and have taken a lead position in the EV market. The groundbreaking of the new battery pack manufacturing facility marks an important step in our electric mobility journey and reinforces our commitment to building a strong domestic EV ecosystem,” said Dheeraj Hinduja, Executive Chairman, Ashok Leyland.

“Battery pack technology is central to the future of electric mobility and energy storage. This facility will enable us to build advanced battery pack solutions with greater efficiency, safety and reliability while supporting the battery supply chain localisation It will also contribute to developing specialized talent and creating new opportunities in high-technology manufacturing within Tamil Nadu,” said Shenu Agarwal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ashok Leyland.

The company said it has operated in Tamil Nadu for more than 77 years and has expanded from its first manufacturing facility in Ennore in 1948 to nine facilities across more than 800 acres. Over the decades, the company has invested more than INR 90 billion in the state and created more than 37,000 jobs.
