Goa Shipyard Ltd. (GSL), a shipbuilding company, laid the keel for Yard 1283, the fourth Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) being built for the Indian Navy, on 9 June 2025. The ceremony was held at GSL’s shipyard and attended by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Chairman and Managing Director of GSL, and other senior officials from the Indian Navy and GSL.

The NGOPV project is part of a INR 97.81 billion contract awarded to GSL on 30 March 2023 for the in-house design and construction of seven patrol vessels. An additional four NGOPVs are being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata, bringing the total to 11 vessels.

Each NGOPV will be 110 metres long with a weight of approximately 3,000 tonnes. The vessels will be equipped with dual diesel propulsion systems with controllable pitch propellers and will carry indigenously developed weapons and sensor suites. These ships are designed for coastal defence, surveillance, search and rescue operations, protection of offshore assets, and anti-piracy missions.

The keel-laying marks continued progress in the NGOPV programme, following earlier milestones achieved for other vessels in the series. GSL’s shipbuilding activities are also contributing to local supply chains, supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and creating employment opportunities.
