Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) launched the fifth of six 25-ton bollard pull (BP) tugs under contract with the Indian Navy. The event took place on March 31, 2025, at TRSL’s facility in Kolkata, with Commodore Sanjay Kumar, President SSB, Kolkata, in attendance.
The contract, signed on November 12, 2021, involves the construction of six tugs designed and built domestically in accordance with the Indian Register of Shipping’s naval standards. TRSL has progressively delivered these vessels, with the first tug launched earlier in 2024 and the second, named Bahubali, launched in March 2024.
These tugs assist naval ships and submarines during berthing, un-berthing, turning, and maneuvering in confined waters. They are also equipped to provide firefighting support and have limited search and rescue capabilities.
The vessels are powered by two engines generating 1,200 BHP at 1,800 RPM each, featuring azimuth thrusters for enhanced maneuverability. They have a 25-ton bollard pull capacity and are equipped with external firefighting systems, communication, and navigation equipment. The tugs offer a 96-hour endurance and provide accommodations, including mess facilities, for crew members.
