Mandovi Drydocks and Ripley Group are developing a shipbuilding and repair facility at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata. The project, covering 121 acres on a 30-year lease, will begin with an initial investment of INR 2 billion, with plans to expand to INR 20 billion.
The facility will initially focus on constructing ships in the 6,000-8,000-ton range, with production capacity set to increase to 15,000 and 25,000 tons over the next five to six years. The long-term goal includes the construction of Panamax-size vessels.
This development follows other recent initiatives in the sector, including Cochin Shipyard’s new ship repair facility and Deendayal Port Authority’s shipbuilding cluster plans. The project aligns with efforts to utilize port land for private shipyards, supporting the expansion of domestic shipbuilding and repair capabilities.
The investment is expected to contribute to the broader growth of India’s shipbuilding industry by increasing manufacturing capacity and private sector participation.
