Larsen & Toubro’s Digital Energy Solutions (DES) unit, part of the Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division, has secured a contract to develop and implement Energy Management Systems (EMS) in regional and state load dispatch centers across South India. The project will cover 12 control rooms, ensuring reliable and secure grid operations in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.
The contract involves upgrading the Southern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (RLDC) and State Load Dispatch Centers (SLDC) with real-time energy flow monitoring systems. The upgrades will utilize L&T’s proprietary L&T-Spark-CRIMTM (Control Room Integration Middleware) platform to integrate substation data. This work will be carried out without any downtime in the existing operations.
Internationally, L&T DES is also involved in upgrading control rooms in the western United States, managing a complex configuration of 15 Energy Management System hosts. This project will include advanced applications for real-time energy flow monitoring and improved grid reliability.
In India, L&T DES is implementing a series of digital grid modernization initiatives, including the upgrade of National and Regional Transmission Asset Management Centers. These upgrades integrate 13 control rooms nationwide with 270 Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission substations.
L&T DES is also working on renewable energy projects, including a 185 MW solar hybrid plant with 254 MWh of energy storage in Bihar. The project will use the L&T-Spark-HECSTM (Hybrid Energy Management and Control System) for monitoring and control. Additionally, L&T DES provides solar plant controller solutions for multiple large-scale renewable energy projects, currently powering six solar plants with gigawatt-level peak production capacity in India and the Middle East.
In a recent project, L&T DES completed work on a 700 MW solar plant in Saudi Arabia, integrating over 200 solar inverters for grid compliance and reliable operations.
In the U.S., L&T DES is providing engineering services for renewable hybrid substations in Puerto Rico. Following the design phase, L&T will implement a hybrid energy management system that combines solar, energy storage, and substation control from a single platform.
L&T DES is also involved in advanced energy consulting services and research projects in the U.S., focusing on grid resilience, cybersecurity, and decarbonization. These include a grant-funded initiative in California aimed at developing a fully electric, affordable community with advanced renewable energy solutions.
Finally, L&T DES will provide “Balancing Authority” services for a 300 MW solar project in the western U.S., helping integrate renewable energy while ensuring compliance with North Electric Reliability Council (NERC) standards.
These ongoing projects reflect L&T DES’s role in modernizing grid infrastructure and supporting the integration of renewable energy worldwide.
