Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture between India and Russia responsible for manufacturing the Kalashnikov AK-203 assault rifles, has seen a rise in export inquiries from African and Middle Eastern countries. The interest comes amid sanctions imposed on Russia by the US and other Western nations, opening opportunities for the joint venture to potentially expand its export portfolio.

The AK-203, a modernized version of the Kalashnikov rifle, is produced in India, making it the first country outside Russia to manufacture rifles from the AK-200 series. Earlier this year, IRRPL delivered 35,000 AK-203 rifles to the Indian Army, with additional units expected to be supplied in the near future.

A defence official stated that the demand for AK-203 rifles has increased in regions where Russian arms have traditionally been popular, adding that India’s collaboration with Russia positions IRRPL to meet this demand.

While no formal export agreements have been reached, the growing inquiries indicate potential for future deals, especially in the African and Middle Eastern markets. IRRPL’s activities may also contribute to India’s efforts to expand its defense manufacturing sector.
