The Ministry of Defence has signed a $248 million contract with Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport to procure 1,000-horsepower (HP) engines for the Indian Army’s T-72 tanks. The agreement includes engines in fully assembled, completely knocked down, and semi knocked down conditions.

As part of the contract, technology transfer will be provided to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory) in Avadi, Chennai, facilitating the integration and licensed production of these engines in India. This aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, aiming to boost self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

The Indian Army currently operates approximately 2,500 T-72 tanks, each equipped with a 780 HP engine. Upgrading to 1,000 HP engines is expected to enhance the tanks’ mobility and operational capabilities. The T-72 tanks, introduced in India in the 1970s, have undergone multiple upgrades to remain effective in modern combat scenarios.

This engine upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the armored fleet and maintain combat readiness. The procurement underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities and promoting indigenous production in the defense sector.
