Coal India (CIL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) to evaluate the feasibility of a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) project at Western Coalfields (WCL). The initiative will employ surface coal gasification technology to convert coal into SNG.
Surface coal gasification involves chemically transforming coal into synthetic natural gas, a cleaner alternative to traditional coal-based energy. The proposed project aims to explore new applications of coal resources and assess its potential for producing SNG as part of efforts to diversify energy sources and address environmental concerns.
The agreement is a collaboration between two public sector enterprises and reflects their intent to explore technologies that align with energy transition strategies. Further details about the timeline, investment, or expected output of the project have not been disclosed.
