Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has commissioned a 5 megawatt green hydrogen production facility at its Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh. The plant, which includes two electrolysers with a capacity of 500 Nm³/hour each, is expected to produce over 780 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. According to BPCL, the facility could lead to an annual reduction of approximately 9,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. The project was completed in 15 months.
The Bina plant is part of BPCL’s broader investment strategy, which includes a USD 8.95 billion allocation over five years for refining, petrochemical, and renewable energy projects. This includes a USD 5.85 billion ethylene cracker project at the Bina Refinery and plans to develop 2 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2025, expanding to 10 GW by 2035.
BPCL has also collaborated with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to develop an indigenous alkaline electrolyser, which was showcased at India Energy Week 2024.
