Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India have established a 50:50 joint venture focused on manufacturing-related activities in renewable energy and green hydrogen. The new entity will be responsible for the production, operation, and sale of renewable energy and green hydrogen, along with associated derivatives.

According to a statement issued by the companies, the joint venture will also assess opportunities in green ammonia production, green fuel bunkering, and technologies aimed at reducing emissions in port operations. The collaboration will leverage BPCL’s existing infrastructure and Sembcorp’s experience in renewable energy.

Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India is a subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries. Sembcorp currently operates 6 gigawatts of renewable energy assets in India and plans to utilize these assets for green hydrogen and ammonia production.

BPCL Chairman and Managing Director G. Krishnakumar said, “This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a sustainable tomorrow. By pooling our expertise and resources, we aim to develop innovative and best-in-class renewable energy and green hydrogen solutions to support India’s climate goals.”

BPCL has stated its aim to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 10 gigawatts and achieve net-zero emissions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2040.
