A new compressed biogas (CBG) plant has been inaugurated in Batala, Punjab, aiming to process 100 tons of pressmud daily to produce 5.6 tons of biogas. The plant, developed by MEPL BioEnergy LLP in collaboration with CEID Consultants and Engineering Pvt. Ltd., represents a ₹35 crore investment and covers 10 acres of land.

The facility will utilize waste from sugar mills in Batala and Gurdaspur and is part of a broader initiative to enhance renewable energy production using agro-industrial byproducts. Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL) will supply piped natural gas (PNG) produced at the facility to nearby areas.

The project is reported to be the first of its kind in Punjab, with GGL already converting a domestic customer in a nearby village to PNG. This marks a step towards expanding clean energy infrastructure and aligns with state and national goals for reducing air pollution.

The upgraded sugar mill in Batala, launched alongside the CBG plant, is also expected to contribute to local economic activity by providing employment opportunities. The plant’s developers highlight its potential to generate income for sugar mills and support rural economic growth.
