Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has launched its second Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) for the Indian Navy. The vessel, named INS Utkarsh, was launched from the company’s Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai.

The launch follows an accelerated production schedule, with the first MPV, INS Samarthak, launched just three months earlier. INS Samarthak is currently undergoing testing and trials before delivery to the Indian Navy. Both vessels are part of L&T’s efforts to contribute to India’s naval capabilities under the “Make in India” initiative.

The MPVs, measuring 107 meters in length and 18.6 meters in width, have a displacement exceeding 3,750 tonnes. Designed for multiple roles, the vessels are equipped to support maritime surveillance, humanitarian assistance, pollution control, and the launch and recovery of surface and aerial assets. They also serve as trial platforms for developing advanced weapons and sensors.

According to L&T, the design and engineering of the MPVs were handled by its in-house Warship Design Centre in Chennai, while construction took place at the Kattupalli Shipyard. The facility is equipped with advanced capabilities for shipbuilding and repair, including ship-lift systems and wet and dry berths.

L&T is concurrently constructing three Cadet Training Ships and six other defense vessels for the Indian Navy under a public-private partnership model. Additionally, repair work on the naval ship INS Tir is underway at the Kattupalli Shipyard.
