Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. has inaugurated a new manufacturing and battery assembly facility dedicated to its Electric Origin SUV line at its Chakan plant. The facility is part of the company’s strategy to enhance electric vehicle (EV) production capabilities and advance its sustainable manufacturing goals.
Located within the 2.83 km² Chakan manufacturing hub, the new facility is powered entirely by renewable energy. The company has allocated ₹4,500 crores for the project, which forms part of a ₹16,000-crore investment plan for the fiscal years 2022 to 2027. This investment supports powertrain development, new product platforms, and increased manufacturing capacity.
Facility Highlights
- The EV manufacturing hub spans approximately 88,000 square meters and integrates advanced automation, including over 1,000 robots and multiple automated transfer systems.
- The facility features an AI-driven body shop, a fully automated press shop, and a robotic paint shop, ensuring high levels of quality and efficiency.
- Advanced manufacturing technologies, including Industry 4.0 solutions, Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), streamline material handling and production processes.
- The plant aims to achieve a 25% gender diversity ratio in its workforce.
Battery Assembly Operations
- The facility includes a compact battery manufacturing line utilizing patented processes and Industry 4.0 technologies.
- Features include hidden cell terminal welding, real-time temperature monitoring, and multi-layered end-of-line testing to ensure product reliability and safety.
- Batteries are designed with IP67 ingress protection and incorporate proprietary switching technology to enhance durability and performance.
The company stated that the new facility is a step toward advancing its EV production capabilities and contributing to India’s goals for reducing carbon emissions.
