A new Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)/Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Electrical Safety Test Facility has been inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. The facility is designed to support manufacturers and startups in testing electronic and medical devices for compliance with international safety standards.
The facility is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and funded by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) under the National Biopharma Mission. It is capable of conducting both pre-compliance and compliance testing across several global standards, including IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, IEC 61000-4-3, IEC 61000-4-6, IEC 61010-1, CISPR 11, CISPR 14, CISPR 15, CISPR 32, and CISPR 35.
The launch event was attended by Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur; Dr. Raj K Shirumalla, Mission Director of the National Biopharma Mission; Prof. Braj Bhushan, Deputy Director; Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development; Prof. Yogesh Chauhan, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering; Dr. Pooja Tanwar, Programme Manager at BIRAC; Dr. D.C. Pande; and M.G. Sathyendra.
Prof. Agrawal stated, “EMC testing plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and dependability of these devices.” Dr. Shirumalla added, “This facility will be an asset to India’s rapidly expanding MedTech sector.”
The facility is intended to address the limited availability of testing infrastructure in the region and to provide access to affordable testing services. It aims to assist device manufacturers in meeting safety and performance standards required in global markets.
