NXP Semiconductors has initiated the process to establish a second research and development unit in Greater Noida’s Semiconductor Park, as part of its previously announced USD 1 billion investment in India. The Dutch semiconductor company is in talks with the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) to acquire land in Sector 10 of the Greater Noida region for the proposed facility, which will focus on R&D, system innovation, and lab infrastructure.
The plan follows discussions between NXP CEO Kurt Sievers and the Uttar Pradesh government during the Semicon India 2024 event, with further meetings held in October 2024.
As part of its five-year plan, NXP announced it would invest USD 1 billion to expand its hardware and software R&D activities in India. This includes work related to its recently launched 5-nanometer automotive chip. The company also aims to double its India-based workforce to over 6,000, with design engineers—who currently constitute more than 80% of its 3,000 employees in India—remaining central to this expansion.
NXP projects that India will contribute between 8% and 10% of its global revenue within three to five years. The company currently operates four design centres across India, with an increased focus on artificial intelligence and automotive technology as part of its global strategy.
The move comes amid broader semiconductor developments in Greater Noida and other regions. HCL Group and Foxconn are setting up a semiconductor plant in Greater Noida with an investment of INR 37 billion. Other semiconductor facilities under the India Semiconductor Mission are underway in Sanand, Gujarat (Micron Technologies, Kaynes Technologies, CG Power-Renesas Electronics and Star Microelectronics), Dholera and Assam (Tata Group).
NXP Semiconductors, headquartered in the Netherlands, develops solutions across automotive, industrial, and IoT sectors. Its India operations are focused on design and development, particularly in software and chip design.
