Reliance Infrastructure is establishing a greenfield explosives and ammunition manufacturing facility in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. The plant, being developed within the Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City, involves an investment of INR 50 billion and is aimed at supporting the production of newly developed 155mm artillery ammunition.
The facility is part of the company’s broader defence manufacturing initiative and is expected to serve both domestic and international markets. Ten Indian companies have already been integrated into the supply chain to support immediate production once operations begin.
The ammunition to be produced at the Ratnagiri facility was developed under the Design-cum-Production Partner programme of the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), using fully indigenous technology. A company spokesperson confirmed that the development of four new types of 155mm projectiles has been completed.
Reliance Infrastructure anticipates orders worth INR 100 billion from the Ministry of Defence over the next decade. Additionally, the company is targeting INR 100 billion in export revenue from the new ammunition during the same period. The Indian Army’s annual expenditure on ammunition is projected to rise from INR 70 billion in 2023 to INR 120 billion by 2032.
Reliance was the only private sector participant selected for the DRDO ammunition development programme, alongside public sector firm Yantra India.
Reliance Infrastructure Limited operates in engineering and construction, power, roads, metro rail, and defence manufacturing. The company is part of the Reliance Group and is engaged in initiatives related to infrastructure development across India.
