ZF Group, a manufacturer of mobility systems, has inaugurated a new manufacturing plant in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, with an investment of EUR 20 million (approximately INR 1.92 billion). The facility will produce axles and transmissions for the construction and railway sectors, supporting both domestic and export markets.
The new plant spans 10,000 square meters and is the company’s 19th manufacturing facility in India and 11th in Tamil Nadu. It is focused on localizing the ERGOPOWER transmission and MULTITRAC axle series for the construction equipment industry, and the EcoMet transmission for metro rail applications. According to the company, the plant is part of ZF’s strategy to manufacture in India for both local and international markets.
“The industrialization of the ERGOPOWER transmission and MULTITRAC axle series at ZF Coimbatore plant will contribute to that development. This will help the plant to cater its production to domestic and export requirements,” said Andreas Moser, Executive Vice President – Industrial Technologies, ZF Group.
ZF’s ERGOPOWER M transmission is an automatic powershift transmission optimized for construction machinery. The company states that the transmission can offer fuel savings of up to 15 percent through its optional efficiency package. The MULTITRAC axle series is designed for heavy-duty construction work and includes multiple configurations for ratios, brake systems, and differential locks.
For the railway sector, ZF will localize the EcoMet gearbox at the Coimbatore facility. The company highlights its modular design, which allows it to adapt to different metro types without additional development or manufacturing costs.
“India is a strategic market for ZF Group, and we focus India for its engineering and manufacturing capabilities. This is led by its growing domestic market,” said Dr. Peter Laier, Member of the ZF Group Board of Management and Head of Commercial Vehicle Solutions and Industrial Technology.
“Our strategy, ‘Make in India for India and Make in India for the World,’ underscores the immense domestic growth opportunities while positioning India as a global leader in manufacturing excellence,” added Akash Passey, President, ZF Group India.
The new plant is expected to strengthen ZF’s supply capabilities for both Indian and global OEMs in the off-highway and rail sectors.
