Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commenced the supply of IGBT-based underslung traction converters for semi-high-speed sleeper trainsets under the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project. The first set of converters was dispatched on 08 January 2026 from BHEL’s manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, marking the start of deliveries for the propulsion package.

According to a press release issued by BHEL, the supplies are being executed as part of a BHEL-led consortium in partnership with Titagarh Rail Systems Limited. The commencement of deliveries represents the company’s entry into the semi-high-speed propulsion segment for passenger rail applications.

The underslung traction converters have been designed specifically for the sleeper trainsets. The underslung configuration positions propulsion equipment beneath the train coach, freeing onboard space and enabling greater flexibility for passenger-related systems. The converters use insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology to deliver high-efficiency power conversion suited for sustained train operations.

BHEL stated that the propulsion system for the semi-high-speed trainsets is designed for an operational speed of up to 160 kilometres per hour, with a design speed of 176 kilometres per hour. The system incorporates advanced thermal management features intended to ensure reliability during long-distance overnight journeys.

In addition to traction converters, BHEL has developed and manufactured other propulsion equipment for the project, including traction motors and transformers. These components have been produced at the company’s manufacturing units in Bhopal and Jhansi and form part of the integrated propulsion solution for the sleeper trainsets.

The first dispatch followed a flag-off ceremony held at the Bengaluru plant. The traction converters are being shipped to Kolkata, where final assembly of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trainsets is planned as part of the rolling stock manufacturing programme.

BHEL is a state-owned engineering and manufacturing company with operations across power generation, transmission, transportation, defence and industrial sectors. The company is engaged in the design and manufacture of electrical and propulsion systems for railway and rolling stock applications.
