Solar Industries India Limited founder-chairman Satyanarayan Nuwal has been conferred the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his contribution to the defence manufacturing sector. The award recognises his role in expanding private sector participation in military explosives and ammunition manufacturing and in advancing indigenous defence production capabilities.

Nuwal founded Solar Industries in 1995 as a commercial explosives business. Over the subsequent decades, the company expanded into defence manufacturing and became the first private sector enterprise in India to manufacture high-grade military explosives and complete ammunition systems, breaking the earlier dominance of state-owned entities in this segment.

According to the award citation, developments undertaken under Nuwal’s leadership contributed to India’s transition from an importer of defence explosives to a manufacturer and exporter. Solar Industries currently supplies defence products to customers in more than 65 countries, the citation noted.

Two defence technologies developed under his stewardship were specifically referenced. Nagastra-1, a man-portable loitering munition, is described as India’s first indigenous system of its kind, with more than 75 percent domestic content. The system is designed to carry out precision strikes with a reported accuracy of up to two metres. The citation also highlighted SEBEX-2, a high-energy explosive material developed for use in warheads and missile systems, which is reported to deliver significantly higher explosive performance compared with conventional TNT-based formulations.

Solar Industries has, in recent years, secured defence orders across multiple product categories, including rockets, grenades and counter-unmanned aerial systems. The company has also indicated a focus on expanding capabilities in emerging areas such as robotics and micro-missile systems, reflecting broader shifts in defence technology and warfare.

Solar Industries India Limited operates manufacturing facilities across India and produces a range of industrial and defence explosives, ammunition and related systems. The company is also active in exports and supplies products to both domestic and international defence and industrial customers.
