Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been named as one of the preferred Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors by Masdar for the north site of a solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) gigascale project in Abu Dhabi.
The project, developed by Masdar in collaboration with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), will combine a 5.2 GW solar PV plant with a 19 GWh BESS to supply up to 1 GW of continuous power, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The north site and south site will each feature 2.6 GW of solar PV capacity and 9.5 GWh of BESS.
Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chief Operating Officer of Masdar, described the initiative as a significant advancement in clean energy technology. “The record-breaking project we are developing with EWEC is a giant step forward in the clean energy transformation, overcoming the intermittency of renewables and enabling the dispatch of clean energy 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As Masdar’s largest and most ambitious project to date, we made sure we are working with the best possible partners that will deliver to the highest standards. I look forward to working with these preferred contractors in setting a new global benchmark in clean energy innovation,” he stated.
S N Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro, highlighted the company’s role in supporting the energy transition. “The foresightedness coupled with definitive actions reflect UAE’s leadership role in accelerating sustainable economic progress. L&T is determined to bring in advanced capabilities for the global energy transition,” he said.
T Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) of L&T, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with Masdar. “We are happy that our trusted partnership with Masdar has culminated in such a coveted opportunity to advance the deployment of clean energy projects in the region. With our all-round capabilities in dispatchable renewable generation, power T&D and digital solutions, we are deeply committed to delivering this ultra-mega project that fuels futuristic ambitions,” he added.
The announcement was made during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, where the letter of award was signed between Abdulaziz Alobaidli of Masdar and A. Ravindran, Senior Vice President and Head of Renewables IC at L&T.
