NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a subsidiary of NLC India Limited, and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) have signed a Joint Venture Agreement to establish a solar power project in Assam with a planned capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW).

Under the agreement, a new Joint Venture Company (JVC) will be created with NIRL holding a 51% equity stake and APDCL holding 49%. The project is designed to support Assam’s energy demands through the generation of renewable energy. NIRL will oversee renewable energy project development, while APDCL will facilitate land acquisition, regulatory approvals, and the necessary power evacuation infrastructure. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) will be signed with Assam’s distribution companies for the purchase of all electricity generated by the project for a period of 25 years.

The initiative aims to strengthen Assam’s energy security by providing an affordable and reliable power supply and contributing to the state’s long-term energy sustainability. It also aligns with the Government of India’s renewable energy goals and commitments to increasing the share of clean energy in the national energy mix.

Representatives at the signing event included Prasanna Kumar Acharya, Director (Finance) of NIRL, and Jagdish Mazumdar, Executive Director (Planning & Business Development) of NIRL, alongside senior officials from APDCL and the Assam government.

In a statement, the agreement was noted as an opportunity to address Assam’s renewable energy needs and contribute to reducing the region’s carbon footprint. The JVC will also support the state in meeting its Renewable Purchase Obligations and encourage the adoption of clean energy technologies.
