Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has completed the installation of a second 30mm Naval Surface Gun (NSG 30), developed in India, on the second Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC). The weapon is integrated with an Electro-Optic Fire Control System (EOFCS) and has undergone sea trials demonstrating firing accuracy.
The NSG 30 is designed as a Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) for smaller naval vessels and serves as secondary armament on larger platforms. It features an automatic 30mm cannon for engaging fast-moving surface targets and low-flying aerial threats. The integrated EOFCS enables targeting in both day and night conditions and supports rapid threat response.
The system was jointly developed by GRSE, Hyderabad-based engineering firm BHSEL, and Elbit Systems Land. GRSE reports that the gun currently includes about 60 percent indigenous components, with efforts ongoing to further localize production in future iterations. The NSG 30 is being deployed on the Arnala-class ASW SWCs and is slated for wider use across upcoming Indian Navy platforms.
The first Arnala-class ship was commissioned in June 2025. The second, now equipped with the NSG 30 system, is scheduled for commissioning in August 2025.
GRSE, headquartered in Kolkata, is a defense public sector undertaking that builds naval vessels for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. The company is also expanding into indigenous weapons development through collaborations with domestic and international partners.
